How to Force Anki to Upload Changes

"On next sync, forcefulness changes in one direction" - non working

I can't reliably force an upload to ankiweb. I want to remove all notes so I delete the note types. If I delete them all and then Anki will automatically just load them back from ankiweb. If I remove one or 2 at a fourth dimension it asks me which direction to sync. But every fourth dimension I try to remove the final note blazon containing notes it always downloads them from ankiweb. When I select the "On next sync, force changes in i direction" it is ignored. In fact I select it, click close, then become dorsum to the preference page and it is unselected over again. This is all very frustrating, I just want to start with a clean slate so I can import from a backup.

Could the programmer please fix this bug? And in the meantime is there a workaround to force upload?

Thanks!
Martin

    Hullo Martin,

If y'all're attempting to sync with no cards in your collection, Anki volition assume you want to download from AnkiWeb. Adding a carte du jour will prevent this from happening.

Merely there is no reason at all information technology should presume that. It is definitely a bug and acquired me a lot of frustration. Why should I jump through Anki's hoops to make it do what I want? I'k certain information technology would as well save a lot of other people frustration if it were fixed.

    How-do-you-do Martin,

I'one thousand sorry this has caused you frustration, simply I'm afraid we don't actually see many users attempting to upload collections with no cards, so Anki is optimised for the more mutual case where a user is starting syncing on a new device. Please too annotation that if you're intending to import a collection/backup.apkg all existing content in the collection is erased start, so at that place is no demand to manually clean things out prior to the import.

Only when I attempt to import the new collections without deleting the old ones information technology says "Updated 0 of 50 existing notes. Some updates were ignored because note type has changed". You lot only need to google how to force anki to upload, or how to articulate anki, and then see there are lots of other people who have been frustrated with this. The solutions range from adding some bogus cards to just creating a fresh ankiweb acccount, and take everyone shaking their heads in atheism at how hard it is. My wife had exactly the same trouble so in our firm it'southward two out of 2 users take wasted time on this. Your "optimisation" is for anki to think it knows improve than the user what the user wants to practise, even when the user has given anki explicit instructions, and doesn't fifty-fifty tell the user it is ignoring their instructions. It is obviously a issues, the likes of which I've but always seen Microsoft back up staff trying to deny. Why non just add together a button to explicitly force a consummate upload or complete download and let united states all get on with learning rather than working out anki'due south fickle AI idiosyncrasies?

Earlier having this behavior, nosotros had a very large number of users accidentally overwriting their local collections with an empty collection from AnkiWeb, which acquired fifty-fifty more frustration. The number of users irritated by this opposite beliefs is very low in comparison.

However, this is not to say there'due south no fashion to improve on the situation, and we'll be thinking almost it for hereafter releases.

Thank you for reconsidering. I suspect the reason people accept accidentally overwritten their local collections is considering you don't provide an explicit command to upload the entire collection, only a checkbox to say that the next sync should be a full upload, which the assistance page promises will ask which direction. The trouble is the checkbox doesn't work reliably (as I mentioned earlier) and so people click information technology expecting the program to ask which management on next sync, only information technology and then goes and clobbers all of their hard work. I can imagine this would be extremely frustrating and would crusade a lot more loud protests than the problem I'm having. You can't assume the number of users frustrated is proportional to the number of complaints, as a lot of people won't carp complaining if they just see it as minor buggy behaviour that has a workaround, even if the workaround information technology cumbersome.

If you give users total command instead of providing a buggy half-broiled control that leaves users holding their jiff when they click the sync button, everyone will exist much happier and they have no-one to blame if they clobber their own data. By all means keep the default sync behaviour, just add the facility for full control.

    Cheers for listening.
